About the Project

Shipwreck City is a volunteer-led effort to document, film, and archive every sunken vessel resting on the floor of Seattle's Lake Union and adjacent waterways. Using ROV technology — underwater robots equipped with cameras and side-scan sonar — the team systematically locates, films, and catalogs each target and publishes all findings openly online.

The project builds on a 2017 side-scan sonar survey by Coastal Sensing and Survey, which first mapped approximately 100 submerged targets in Lake Union, as well as historical efforts by DCS Films and the Lake Union Virtual Museum. Shipwreck City's mission is to visit every target, capture high-resolution video of the never-before-seen wrecks and debris, and preserve the historical record for public awareness and use.

All data, photography, and footage are published at ShipwreckCity.org as they are acquired, at no cost to the public. The project actively seeks donations to fund their efforts.

Boilerplate

Shipwreck City is a volunteer-led ROV exploration project documenting the sunken vessels of Seattle's Lake Union and adjacent waterways. Using underwater robots equipped with cameras and side-scan sonar, the team is cataloging the 100+ submerged targets and releasing the entire archive for free at ShipwreckCity.org.

Quotes for Use

"Lake Union is one of Seattle's most-visited lakes — and almost nobody knows what's beneath the surface. We're changing that."
— Phil Parisi, Founder and ROV Pilot, ShipwreckCity.org
"Every ROV dive into Lake Union is a mystery. We go down never knowing exactly what we're going to find, and that's the best part."
— Captain George Spano, Boat Captain, ShipwreckCity.org
"Documenting what is below the surface of Lake Union will help us understand how to be better stewards of urban nature and open doors to scientific and historical research we can all benefit from."
— Libbie Barnes, Community Manager, ShipwreckCity.org
